Ski turns for beginners: 6 things to know to make your first ski turn

Making your first turns on skis can be an exhilarating experience. When you are a beginner skier it is important to learn the proper technique to ensure a smooth and controlled turn. Here are some steps to help you make your first ski turn:

Step 1: Find a gentle slope

In order to learn how to turn on skis if you are a beginner, start by finding a gentle slope that is suitable for beginners. This will allow you to practice your turns without feeling overwhelmed. Make sure the slope is wide enough and free from obstacles.

Step 2: Get into the proper stance

Stand with your skis in the snowplow position. Bend your knees slightly and keep your weight centered over your skis. This will help you maintain balance and control throughout the turn. This is very important in order to let the skis free to move properly into the turn.

Step 3: Initiate the ski turn

To initiate the turn, you will have to flatten your skis on the ground. This is not easy to achieve, and the best trick you can try is to stretch your legs as high as possible. You should then feel your skiis getting free to go down the slope and start to turn.   Keep your upper body facing downhill and your eyes focused on where you want to go.

Step 4: Control your speed

As you start the turn, control your speed keeping the snowplow on. You can start with a big-shaped snowplow and slowly get used to make it smaller and smaller. This will help you maintain control and allow you adjust the speed as you feel more comfortable to turn.

Step 5: Complete the ski turn

As your skis have initiated the turn and you are in control of the speed, guide your skis with your feet in the direction you want to go.  This will help you complete the turn and prepare for the next one.

Step 6: Practice ski turns for beginners

Like any skill, making turns on skis takes practice. Take your time to practice on different slopes and gradually increase the difficulty level. With practice, you will become more confident and comfortable making turns.

Remember, making your first turn on skis can be challenging, but with the right technique and practice, you will soon be gliding down the slopes with ease. Enjoy the thrill of skiing and have fun!
